Start with the instructions on your own garment. Care can vary between styles, even when they use the same fibers.
Read the label before you wash
Check the wash, bleach, and dry symbols. The number inside a wash tub is the maximum water temperature. A line beneath it means a gentler cycle; two lines mean a very gentle one. A hand means hand wash. A crossed-out tub means do not wash in water.
For drying, a circle inside a square refers to tumble drying; lines inside a square describe natural drying. A crossed-out symbol rules out that method. The GINETEX guide explains unfamiliar symbols.
Prepare the garment
Separate light and dark colours, and keep delicate pieces away from rough items that might catch the fabric. Fasten any hooks. If the label allows machine washing, a mesh bag can help keep the piece separate from other clothes.
Wash and dry as directed
Use the method shown on the label. When hand washing, avoid rubbing or wringing the fabric. For machine washing, stay within the listed cycle and maximum temperature. Check the bleach symbol before using a product that contains bleach.
Dry it as the label directs, and let it dry completely before storing it.
